Mystic Seaport Educators in collaboration with teachers at the Pine Point School in Stonington, CT developed and implemented a six-week apprenticeship immersion program at the Museum. The program, which also serves as the basis for an assessment project at Pine Point School, familiarizes students with historical trades and research in an interactive environment. The apprenticeship includes an orientation visit to Mystic Seaport; six sessions with a master from the Museums Interpretation staff who instructs students how to cook on an open hearth, do ship carving, study maritime navigation, practice sailors tasks or become a Museum roleplayer; a visit to the Museums Collections Research Center to learn how to use primary resources while conducting research and an assessment project and presentation for their peers and teachers. The apprenticeship program was also one of the inspirations for the Museums new immersion program, A Day in 1876, that has been designed for public schools. Pine Point School is an independent, co-educational day school of 250 students located in Stonington, CT.
