Hurricane Charley strengthened rapidly just before striking the southwestern coast of Florida, over Charlotte Harbor, as a Category Four hurricane. Although extremely small in size, Charley produced sustained winds of 150mph and gusts to near 175mph, causing catastrophic wind damage in the communities of Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda, FL. The Charlotte County Medical Center recorded an unofficial gust of 150kts (173mph) and the Charlotte County Airport recorded 139kts (160mph). Charley's minimum central pressure at landfall was 942mb (27.82in) and I recorded 950mb (28.05in) at my location near Fawcett Memorial Hospital. Veteran storm chaser Andy Dressler accompanied me on this chase.

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Southwestern Eye Center . Thriving in ideal conditions, Hurricane Rick is expected to become a major hurricane over the weekend reaching winds of nearly 140 mph by Sunday evening. Rick became a hurricane early Friday and continues explosive development with most computer model output on the storm showing sustained winds likely maxing out near 145 mph by the end of the weekend. With sea surface temperatures near 84-86 F and very little upper level wind shear (winds less than 10 kt), Rick will remain is a very favorable environment until Monday or Tuesday of next week as the massive storm nears the southwestern tip of Baja California. As of Friday afternoon, tropical storm force winds extend outward nearly 200 miles from the storm center with hurricane force winds roughly 70 miles outward from the eye. The latest National Hurricane Center and NASA imagery shows massive hot tower overshooting tops aligning near the southeastern developing eyewall, a sure sign of a hurricane in strengthening mode. The video below shows some of the rapidly cooling cloud tops and late day shadowing on the visible imagery showing these structures. As the prevailing wind pattern that is conducive to Rick's strengthening is fairly weak, the storm is expected to travel roughly WNW in the next two days before eventually making a turn to the north and most likely towards the central and southern portion of Baja California next week. At this point as Rick begins to encounter cooler sea surface temperatures and increasing ...

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Southwestern Eye Center . Music: Bob Rosenburg Will To Power Radar view from Melbourne, Florida of hurricane Andrew as it crosses south Florida. Hurricane Andrew was the last and third most powerful of three Category 5 hurricanes to make landfall in the United States during the 20th century, after the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Hurricane Camille in 1969. Andrew caused 65 deaths. Andrew was the first named storm and only major hurricane of the otherwise inactive 1992 Atlantic hurricane season. During Andrew's duration it struck the northwestern Bahamas, southern Florida at Homestead (south of Miami), and southwest Louisiana around Morgan City in August. Andrew caused .5 billion in damage (.1 billion in 2006 US dollars), with most of that damage cost in south Florida, although other sources put damage between billion to billion in total costs. Its central pressure ranks as fourth-lowest in US landfall records and Andrew was the costliest Atlantic hurricane in US history until surpassed by Hurricane Katrina of the 2005 season. It was also the first of two Category 4 or higher storms to strike the United States that year (Hurricane Iniki in the Central Pacific struck Hawaii a couple of weeks later). At the time Andrew was the first major hurricane to affect the Florida peninsula in over twenty-five years. Hurricane Donna of 1960 had been the last major storm to pass directly over south Florida peninsula, making two landfalls: one of over the Keys: and the second over Naples, Florida ...

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Southwestern Eye Center . Level 2 base reflectivity radar loop of Hurricane Alex from the lowest tilt of the KBRO (Brownsville, Texas) site. The loop runs from 1004UTC on June 30, 2010 to 0857UTC on July 1, 2010 and shows Hurricane Alex making landfall over northeastern Mexico, near Soto La Marina and Campo Pesquero Enramadas and then moving west-southwest across the state of Tamaulipas. The loop includes a volumized 3D view of the hurricane's base reflectivity. The color table highlights reflectivity values of 25 DBZ or greater. For a portion of this loop the hurricane's radar presentation displays a double eyewall structure with a distinct "moat" delineating the inner and outer eyewalls... as well as the brief formation of a "hub" cloud (at the center of the eye) just prior to landfall. The following paper goes into more detail on the relationship of subsidence within the eye of hurricanes and the formation of a hub cloud. www.ssec.wisc.edu

We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Southwestern Eye Center . This is my Hurricane Andrew chase video. The footage was taken during Andrew's landfall on the Southeast Florida coast, at Coconut Grove, south of Miami. Though Andrew was extremely small, moving very quickly and made landfall about 15 miles to the south, my location was right at the edge of the hurricane's northern eyewall. Unfortunately the entire peak of the storm was at night, however, using a portable spotlight, I was able to capture footage throughout the entire event. Even with the challenging video conditions, Andrew's ferocity is clearly obvious in this footage. The roar of the wind is deafening, punctuated by breaking glass and other debris. Peak winds occur between 13 through 17 minutes into the video, and are sustained near 125-130mph with gusts near 150mph. The anemometer at the National Hurricane Center (about 2 miles west-southwest of my location) failed after recording a gust to 164mph. Based on post-analysis, Andrew is now estimated to have had sustained winds of 165mph with peak gusts near 200mph at landfall in South Florida, making it one of only three Category Five hurricanes ever to strike the United States.
