They've spit in Mies's eye with two recent additions: Helmut Jahn's Quonset-hut dorms just north of 35th St., and at 33rd, the squashed-under-the-el-tracks Student Center designed by Rem Koolhaas. Its peculiar design necessitated the building of a huge sound-deadening tube around the entire el structure where it passes overhead. The neighborhoods north and south of campus are pretty much as they were -- bleak. Vacant lots and more vacant lots. In Bronzeville, the one blues club has moved to Hyde Park. The one big change: condos are going up at the southwest corner of 35th and State, on the site of the CHA's former Stateway Gardens. There's only one old, vacant highrise left. And Police Headquarters has moved from 11th and State to 35th and Michigan; its parking lot spills under the el tracks all the way to State Street. Still not a good idea to walk north or south of campus, unless you've got your game face on. By the way, did you know that IIT is now in Dorothy Tillman's ward? But fear not; you can bet that her office returns IIT administration's phone calls.

Since 1990 the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board has supported the most comprehensive soybean disease screening program in the southern US A combination of field nurseries and greenhouse tests are used to evaluate all cultivars that are entered into the official University of Arkansas Variety Testing Program each year for resistance to major diseases of concern in the state and region. Each year, the results of this effort form the basis for the our annual Soybean Update and the SOYVA cultivar selection program to inform growers of the strengths and potential vulnerability of new soybean cultivars relative to diseases. The screening program includes field disease nurseries maintained at the Newport Experiment Station for evaluating cultivars for resistance to southern stem canker, frogeye leaf spot and aerial blight. Manipulation of overhead irrigation and supplemental inoculation with appropriate pathogens allows scientists to evaluate cultivar performance under "worst case scenarios" due to sever disease pressure. A major component of the screening program, in addition to foliar diseases, is screening for resistance to nematodes. Currently, five distinct biotypes (also called races) of the soybean cyst nematode and reniform nematode are tested against all cultivars in greenhouse trials at the main campus in Fayetteville to determine their relative resistance to susceptibility. Similarly, greenhouse screens ar the Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope are ...
