At 4:00 am, today, the eye of Typhoon "BUTCHOY" was located based on satellite and surface data a 470 km east of Basco, Batanes (21.3°N, 126.9°E) with maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph. It is moving North at 22 kph. Southwest monsoon affecting Luzon.

Location of Eye: At 10:00 PM today, the center of Tropical Storm "BUTCHOY" was estimated based on satelliteand surface data at 680 km East of Guiuan,Eastern Samar (10.8°N, 132.4°E) Strength: Maximum sustained winds of 95 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 120 kph Forecast Positions: Tropical Storm "BUTCHOY" is expected to be at 450 km East of Borongan, Eastern Samar tomorrow evening and at 500 km East of Baler,Aurora by Saturday evening. By Sunday evening,it is expected to be at 280 km East of Basco,Batanes. Estimated rainfall amount is from 15 -- 25 mm per hour (heavy) within the 300 km diameter of the Tropical Storm. Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the seaboards of Luzon, Visayas and Northeastern Mindanao due to big waves generated by the effect of the Southwest Monsoon and Tropical Storm "Butchoy". The public and the disaster coordinating councils concerned are advised to take appropriate actions and watch for the next bulletin to be issued at 11 AM tomorrow. Upadate?? The European, GFS, Canadian and to some extent the NOGAPS model continues to strongly hint at some sort of tropical development in the southwest Caribbean. What is forecast to happen and this is the reason why the model guidance are showing what they are showing is that a fairly strong ridge of high pressure will build across the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern United States next week setting up a east to east-southeasterly wind flow over Florida which should increase the moisture and the daily afternoon/evening thunderstorm activity and hopefully this should alleviate the drought & fire danger conditions across Florida, even just a little bit. In addition, this type of pattern with a large high pressure system over the eastern United States should cause pressures to lower over the southwestern Caribbean as early as Tuesday and this trend in lowering in pressures, an increase in thunderstorms and possible low pressure development in the southwest Caribbean will continue right into next weekend. This is a situation that I've been looking at for about three weeks now and I do strongly believe that by Wednesday and Thursday of next week we will be really watching the southwestern Caribbean as pressures should be falling and convection increasing. So, it is something to think about as we head right into the Memorial Day weekend and I will be monitoring things very closely and will keep you all updated.

In between Daytona Beach and Jacksonville FL as it appears right now. Currently the NWS only has "strong cell" listed for this.. and NO warnings.. it appears to be gathering power and steaming south to the coast. I wanted to write up a quick discussion this Saturday morning to mention that thunderstorm activity is starting to increase across the southwestern Caribbean this morning and it is something that will need to be monitored over the next few days. Analysis shows that the overall vorticity or the overall spin in the atmosphere across the southwest Caribbean is increasing. In addition, low-level convergence is also increasing which means that the air is rising in the area which would promote thunderstorm activity. With that said, wind shear values in that area are still pretty unfavorable for development at this time, however, the overall model guidance continues to point towards conditions becoming more favorable for development over the next few days, especially after Monday. It's definitely conceivable that the National Hurricane Center will tag this as Invest 93L by Monday or Tuesday and the overall model guidance continues to insist that tropical development will happen in the western and southwestern Caribbean next week. This is something that I will continue to keep a very close eye on and I will keep you all updated.
